Interview with the lead of a workshop on Copyright, privacy and data protection in the Future Internet at the AFI 360° 2016 Summer School, which will take place in Puebla, Mexico (27-28 May).

Compared to other regions, how good/bad is legal framework of copyright and data protection in Europe?

They are two separate things. Regarding the copyright law, legislation in Europe is fragmented, which is bad for the market. There is no uniform legislation and important differences in the law of the different Member States exist. For example, I can watch some YouTube videos in Spain, and when I go to Germany I cannot because the Copyright Collecting Society in Germany has protested. These internal borders are hampering the development of the market, although this is going to be fixed: the European institutions are working towards the Digital Single Market, and legal harmonization will take place sooner than later……….read more

The rapid advancement of ubiquitous computation and mobile networks together are enabling technology advancements in the area of sensing, predicting and controlling of our physical spaces. Such technology advancements are nowadays deployed in a web based information creation and sharing platform to give form to what is now known as theInternet of Things (IoT).

The Internet of Things is increasingly pervading our world, and can completely change both the design of major infrastructures and the way people behave in their daily activities. Just to give some concrete examples, consider the smart grid for energy distribution, where computational devices communicate and interact to sort out which are the best operational parameters for the whole system. Another example are the recent systems for real time ride-sharing, that allow people to arrange one-time rides at a short notice with their private cars. Widening the scope we can think of sensor networks for environmental monitoring, where sensors from different part of the world provide key information on wild-life, weather and water conditions, air pollution and so forth, or to home automation and ambient assisted living, where various type of sensors can monitor the condition of a private house (or a public buildings) for security or energy efficiency purposes…..read more

Interview with the general chair of SCiFI 2016 (May 25–26, 2016 in Puebla, Mexico), track on Smart Cities and Future Internet of the AFI 360° Summit 2016 co-located conference.

What is the central topic of SCiFI 2016 and why is it important? What is this event’s vision?

The central topic of the conference is the use of Information and Communication Technology for the development of Smart Cities applications and systems. Thanks to this technology, we can face modern problems. Nowadays, most of the population will be living in a city and by consequence we have to do more with the same resources. We are required to move more intelligently, to generate less waste, to collect smarter. It is essential to save energy, to reduce the noise, etc. Part of the solution is highly related with the use of devices connected to the online world, not only smart phones, laptops or tablets, but many more devices. Our world contains millions of these devices exchanging data and with a need for high-bandwidth and high-speed broadband. From one side, it is very important to implement solutions for the modern cities, make them smarter, and from the other to continue to allow the exchange of data even if the number of devices connected to internet explodes…..read more
